Students have many questions regarding NEET UG 2026. NMC has made several changes in NEET UG rules. Now, students with additional biology can also take the exam. It is important for students preparing for NEET UG 2026 to know if there is any upper age limit. The NEET UG exam is held on the first Sunday of May. Accordingly, it is estimated that this year’s NEET UG exam will be held on May 3, 2026. The deadline will be clear in the NTA notification only. If you are preparing for NEET UG 2026 exam, know the eligibility criteria and rules.
For NEET UG 2026, applicants must have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination from a recognized board. Core subjects required are Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English. As per the new NMC guidelines, students studying Biology as an additional subject after 12th are also eligible to apply.
Note that passing 12th standard is not enough to qualify for NEET UG 2026. The qualifying marks are given below:
- General Category: Total 50% marks in PCB subjects
- Reserved Category (OBC/SC/ST): 40% marks in PCB subjects
- PwD (PwD – General): Total 45% marks.
The minimum age limit for NEET 2026 is 17 years. Candidates should be 17 years of age as on December 31, 2026. It is a relief that there is currently no upper age limit for the NEET UG exam. This means that candidates of any age can appear for the medical entrance exam. If NTA and NMC do not make any changes in this rule, it shall be considered as final.
As per NTA rules, there is no limit to the number of attempts to take the NEET exam. As long as a candidate meets the eligibility criteria, he can take the exam multiple times. If you fail the NEET UG exam this year, you can appear again next time. If you have already given NEET UG exam in 2023 or 2024 and failed in those attempts, you can appear again in 2026. Apart from Indian citizens, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), OCIs, and foreign nationals are also eligible to apply for NEET UG 2026.
