All government and private institutions will remain closed during this period. The government has announced a two-day public holiday across the state for the upcoming local government elections, allowing everyone from government employees to private sector workers to participate in the voting process.
The Kerala government has decided to close all government offices and educational institutions on polling day. Private commercial and industrial establishments have also been directed to grant paid leave to their employees.
According to the official notification, December 9 will be a public holiday in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam districts, while December 11 will be a public holiday in Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasargod districts.
Government servants who are electors of polling districts but work in a district where no holiday has been declared will be eligible for special leave. They can avail other eligible leave options (except general leave, commuted leave and earned leave) by submitting proof of inclusion in the electoral roll.
The state government has further directed that private sector employees should be given a full day’s paid leave on polling day, as mandated under the Kerala Panchayat Raj Act and the Kerala Municipal Act. The Labor Commissioner has been directed to ensure strict compliance in IT companies, factories, shops and all other private establishments. Daily wage earners and temporary workers who are voters of the polling district but live or work in another district will also be eligible for leave with pay to exercise their vote.
