According to reports, Lakanwal hails from Afghanistan’s Khost province. He came to the US in August 2021 under Operation Allies Welcome. In 2024, he applied for official refugee status, which was granted in April 2025. A relative of Lockenwall says he served in the military in Afghanistan for nearly 10 years, participating in several operations with U.S. special forces. After arriving in the United States, he lived in Bellingham, Washington with his wife and five children and worked at Amazon. According to relatives, he was out of touch with them for several months.
US President Donald Trump called the incident a terrorist attack and said the perpetrators would have to pay a “heavy price”. He moved to Washington, DC. ordered the immediate deployment of 500 additional National Guard troops to increase security in Trump also announced an immediate ban on the entry of Afghan refugees into the United States. He claimed that many foreign nationals who came under the previous administration were not properly screened and have now become security risks. In his video message, Trump described the incident as a “crime against the entire nation and humanity”.
After the attack, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) took a major step and indefinitely suspended all immigration processes related to Afghan nationals. The agency said security checks and the vetting system would be reviewed. Until the review is completed, no Afghan nationals will be able to proceed through immigration. USCIS said that “the safety of the American public is our number one priority.”
The FBI says Lockenwall carried out the attack alone, but his motive remains unclear. Investigating agencies are treating it as a terrorist incident. Both the New York Post and the Washington Post have confirmed this.
The deployment of the National Guard to Washington, DC has been a subject of controversy for months. A federal judge recently ordered the deployment removed, but the military remains in place pending appeals.
