Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Sunday that US President-elect Donald Trump’s comments about making Canada the 51st state of the US have distracted people from the damage to American consumers due to heavy taxes. Trump has threatened to impose a 25 percent tax on the import of Canadian goods. Trudeau said in an interview with the American news channel MSNBC, “The 51st state of America is not going to be created. People are talking about it, but they are not talking about the impact of the 25 percent tax on steel and aluminum coming into the US. 25 percent don’t want to pay more, which people need to pay more attention to. Trudeau said that things like the imposition of taxes by Trump will harm the American people. – Ap
Canada warns of retaliation
Canadian officials have said Canada will retaliate if Trump follows through on his threat to impose tariffs. He said that if heavy taxes were imposed on the export of Canadian goods, he would also consider imposing taxes on American orange juice, toiletries and some steel products. – Ap
