As with every major technological revolution, the AI era will create new types of jobs, Amazon CEO Jesse said. AI will not eliminate jobs, but will reshape them.
According to Amazon CEO Andy Jesse, fears of widespread job losses due to artificial intelligence (AI) are being exaggerated. In a media interview, Jesse said that AI will change the way we work rather than completely eliminate it. He acknowledged that tasks that required more human labor in the past 20 to 30 years may require fewer people in the future. But that doesn’t mean jobs will disappear entirely.
Jesse said that, as has happened with every major technological revolution, new types of jobs will be created in the AI age. He said, “I believe that jobs that we used to employ large numbers of people in the last 20 to 30 years will not require as many people in the future. But I also believe that new jobs will be created. This has happened with every technological change.”
Meanwhile, several other reports also say that AI will not eliminate jobs, but rather reshape them. According to a recent report from brokerage firm Morgan Stanley, the long-term impact of AI may not be as dire as many believe. While some roles may be automated, most workers will not be permanently unemployed, the report said. They will move into new types of jobs, some of which don’t even exist yet.
To support his argument, Morgan Stanley cites major technological changes over the past 150 years, including electricity, mechanized agriculture, computers, and the Internet. These technologies changed industries and changed the way work was done, but did not completely eliminate human labor.
Spreadsheet example
Examples of spreadsheets are also given in the report. While the introduction of spreadsheets reduced some clerical tasks, they also allowed financial professionals to perform more complex and valuable tasks. Over time, this shift created new career opportunities rather than eliminating the finance sector.
