Farmer Protest: Bench accuses government officials and some farmer leaders of making ‘irresponsible’ statements; Never asked to end Dallewal’s movement, only concerned about farmer’s health: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of India on Thursday pulled the Punjab government and said that its officials and some farmer leaders are creating a false impression in the media that farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal should break his death fast. Attempts are being made. The matter is being heard by the Supreme Court bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan.
The bench clarified that the court had never ordered to break or end Dallewal’s movement (death fast). The bench said that the court’s concern is only about Dallewal’s health and wants him to be given immediate medical attention.
Justice Surya Kant said that the court does not want to say much but it seems that Punjab government officials and some farmer leaders are making irresponsible statements in the media to complicate the situation on the ground. “We need to look into the true seriousness of some farmers’ leaders towards Dallewal,” the bench said.
Punjab advocate general Gurminder Singh, who appeared in the court on this occasion, denied any such attempt to confuse the situation and said that efforts are being made to persuade Dallewal to seek medical help without breaking his fast. are
The bench said that since Punjab Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) are appearing virtually in this matter, it is hoped that the court’s message will reach the government properly. The court asked the two officials to file their affidavits complying with its December 20 order in which the court ordered the Punjab government to shift Dallewal to nearby government-built medical facilities.

The Supreme Court has listed the matter for next hearing on January 6. The apex court also issued notice to the Center on a fresh petition filed by Dallewal seeking a direction to the central government to follow through on promises, including the statutory guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) on crops. which were done to the agitating farmers after the abrogation of the Agrarian Acts in 2021.
It is to be noted that Dallewal, a farmer leader, has been on a death fast since November 26 at the ongoing frontline of farmers’ movement on the Dhabi Gujran/Khanuri border of Punjab and Haryana. 38 days have passed since his death fast and due to this there has been a severe decline in his health.
