> Chandigarh, January 4

Punjab Cabinet Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian on Saturday sought the personal intervention of Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and appealed that the central government should talk to the farmers to end the farmers’ movement.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan was addressing the agriculture ministers of the states under the pre-budget meeting. Punjab Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian, who attended the meeting through video conferencing, raised the issue of farmers’ movement. He said that the states have high expectations from the Center and hope that they will give personal intervention and make their positive contribution on the current affairs.

Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal has been on an indefinite hunger strike for the past 40 days demanding a legal guarantee on the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops. Farmers struggling against the BJP-led central government for their demands had called for a Mahapanchayat in Khanuri on Saturday last week.

Farmers under the banner of the United Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have been sitting on a dharna on the Shambhu and Khanuri border of Punjab and Haryana since February 13 last year. On February 13 last year, the security forces stopped them from leaving Delhi.

Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal (70) has so far refused to seek any medical help despite fasting for a long time, due to which his health has deteriorated.

When asked about holding talks with the agitating farmers, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said on Wednesday that the government will take action on the farmers’ protest on the Punjab-Haryana border as per the directions of the Supreme Court. -News-Patiala
