Bollywood Veteran scriptwriter and father of Salman Khan, Salim Khan recently suffered brain hemorrhage. He is admitted in Lilavati Hospital, Mumbai. He underwent a minor surgical procedure. Right now his condition is stable and he is recovering. At present, he will be kept under the observation of doctors for a few days.

Brain hemorrhage means ‘rupture of a brain vein.’ When the vein bursts, blood starts accumulating inside the brain, due to which sufficient oxygen is not able to reach all the parts of the brain due to the pressure created. This is a life-threatening medical emergency.

According to the ‘National Institute of Health’, every year 35 lakh new cases of brain hemorrhage are reported all over the world. According to ‘Cerebrovascular Society of India’, every year 1.8 to 3.6 lakh cases of brain hemorrhage are reported in India. About 40-50% people die in this condition.

so ‘physical health‘Today I will talk about brain hemorrhage. You will also learn that-

  • What is brain hemorrhage?
  • Why does this happen?
  • Who are at higher risk of brain hemorrhage?
  • What is its treatment?

Question- What is brain hemorrhage?

answer- Brain hemorrhage is a type of brain stroke, which is also called ‘intracranial hemorrhage’. In this, blood starts leaking due to bursting of blood vessels in the brain. This blood keeps accumulating inside the brain. This accumulated blood creates pressure on the brain.

Due to hemorrhage (rupture of a brain vein) and pressure created by accumulated blood, the blood supply to the brain reduces or stops. If the brain does not get oxygen for 2-3 minutes, then brain cells start dying. Therefore, in such conditions, immediate treatment is necessary.

Question: Why does brain hemorrhage occur?

answer- There can be many reasons for this-

  • Due to head injury (accident, old injury) the nerves of the brain can burst.
  • Blood vessels become weak due to accumulation of fat in the arteries. Due to this, they can burst even with slight injury.
  • Blood clotting can also block or damage blood vessels.
  • They can burst due to inflammation or weakness in the blood vessels.
  • Abnormal veins in the brain can burst suddenly due to AVM (arteriovenous malformation).
  • Sometimes nerves can also burst due to brain tumor.
  • High blood pressure (hypertension) is the biggest risk factor for brain hemorrhage.
  • Smoking and consumption of blood thinner medicines also increases the risk of hemorrhage.
  • The risk of hemorrhage increases due to old age, pregnancy and blood vessel related diseases.

Question: How many types of brain hemorrhage are there?

answer- There are mainly five types of brain hemorrhage. Three of these hemorrhages occur outside the brain tissue but inside the skull, epidural, subdural, and subarachnoid.

There are two types of hemorrhages inside the brain tissue – intracerebral and intraventricular. All types of brain hemorrhage and their common causes, see in graphic-

Question- Which of these brain hemorrhages can be the most dangerous?

answer- All types of brain hemorrhage are serious, but intracerebral hemorrhage and subarachnoid hemorrhage are considered the most life threatening.

Intracerebral Hemorrhage: In this, blood starts accumulating directly in the brain tissue, due to which the pressure on the brain increases rapidly and can cause permanent damage to the brain. This can lead to coma condition.

Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: This often happens due to aneurysm bursting (the blood vessel bursts due to weakening of the wall). It can cause unconsciousness or death along with severe headache.

If not treated timely, both conditions can be fatal.

Question- What are the risk factors of brain hemorrhage?

answer- Some medical conditions and injuries may increase the risk of brain hemorrhage. Its risk increases due to uncontrolled high blood pressure, serious head injury, weakening of brain veins (aneurysm) or blood clotting. See all the risk factors in graphic-

Question- Can brain hemorrhage also be genetic?

answer- However, in most cases there is no genetic connection to brain hemorrhage. But in some cases it has been seen that people’s blood vessels were congenitally weak. Weak blood vessels i.e. aneurysm.

Aneurysm or vascular disorder can be genetic. If someone’s parents have such a problem, then the risk of hemorrhage increases.

Question- Does diabetes or hypertension increase the risk of brain hemorrhage?

answer- Yes, uncontrolled hypertension (high blood pressure) is the biggest risk factor for brain hemorrhage. If blood pressure remains high for a long time, the walls of the vessels of the brain become weak. This increases the risk of them bursting.

Blood vessels also get damaged in diabetes. If blood pressure and cholesterol are also increased then the risk of brain hemorrhage increases.

Question- Does smoking cigarettes and alcohol increase the risk of brain hemorrhage?

answer- Yes, consumption of both increases the risk of brain hemorrhage.

Smoking increases blood pressure, weakens the walls of blood vessels and increases the risk of atherosclerosis (cholesterol or plaque accumulation in the vessels).

Drinking alcohol can increase blood pressure and cause liver damage. Blood clotting may become weak. All these conditions weaken the nerves of the brain, increasing the risk of their rupture.

Question- What is the difference between brain hemorrhage and stroke?

answer- Brain hemorrhage is a type of brain stroke, but not all brain strokes are hemorrhage. Understand the difference between the two-

brain hemorrhage

Due to bursting of blood vessels of the brain, blood leaks out and gets accumulated in the brain itself. Due to this, pressure on the brain increases and oxygen supply gets disrupted (stopped).

stroke

The condition of the brain not getting enough blood and oxygen is called stroke. It is of two types. Ischemic (blockage) and hemorrhagic (vein burst).

Question- Can brain hemorrhage also be fatal?

answer- Yes, it can be fatal, because due to accumulation of blood inside the brain, intracranial pressure (pressure created due to leakage of blood on the brain) suddenly increases. Due to this, brain cells may stop getting oxygen and nutrition. Due to this, brain tissues start getting damaged rapidly.

If blood leakage is excessive or affects vital areas, unconsciousness may occur. This can lead to coma, respiratory arrest or even death.

However, with timely treatment, surgery or medicines, life can be saved in many cases.

Question- Which people are at highest risk of brain hemorrhage?

answer- Some people are at higher risk of brain hemorrhage-

  • Who have very high blood pressure.
  • Who has suffered serious head injury.
  • People who take blood thinners.
  • People who smoke a lot or drink alcohol.
  • Those who have diabetes or any vascular disease.
  • Elderly, because blood vessels become fragile with age.

Question- Are there any signs visible before brain hemorrhage?

answer- In most cases there are no very obvious signs at first. In most of the cases the vein bursts suddenly. Look at some of its signs-

  • Very severe and unusual headache, which can be called the worst pain of life.
  • Sudden loss of control over the face or hands and legs is also its main sign.
  • Frequent vomiting, dizziness, blurred vision or difficulty in speaking can be the main signs.
  • If such symptoms are seen, it requires immediate treatment.

Question- What changes should be made in lifestyle to avoid the risk of brain hemorrhage?

answer- To reduce the risk of hemorrhage, it is necessary to make some changes in lifestyle – increase it a little.

Some common questions and answers related to brain hemorrhage

Question- What to do if symptoms of brain hemorrhage are seen?

answer- Immediately call emergency ambulance number 112 or take you to a nearby hospital. Delay can cause permanent brain damage.

Question- Does brain hemorrhage happen suddenly?

answer- Yes, in most cases it happens suddenly. If someone has high BP or aneurysm (vein weakness) then the risk is higher.

Question- Can brain hemorrhage be cured by giving medicines at home?

answer- No, this is a medical emergency. Its treatment is possible only in hospital. Sometimes surgery is also required.

Question- Can a patient recover completely after brain hemorrhage?

answer- Recovery is possible if timely treatment is received, but it depends on the severity of bleeding.

Question- Can this be prevented from happening again?

answer- Yes, it can be prevented from happening again by making necessary changes in lifestyle. Keep blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol under control. Take medicines regularly and follow the doctor’s advice. Take a balanced diet and get plenty of sleep.
