As soon as the plane touched the runway, all eight tires burst simultaneously, smoke rose and explosions were heard. The 221 passengers on board the plane were not injured, but they had to wait on the runway for two hours.
Chaos erupted at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Tuesday evening when a LATAM Airlines flight from Lima, Peru made an emergency landing. While landing on the runway, all eight landing tires of the plane exploded simultaneously, causing a plume of smoke and a loud explosion. LATAM Flight 2482, a Boeing 767, arrived in Atlanta after a nearly seven-hour flight. As the plane touched down, airport staff and passengers heard a variety of popping sounds.
Within seconds, smoke was seen billowing from the wheels, prompting an emergency situation. Although no passengers were injured in the incident, there were obvious signs of damage inside the plane. According to local media, some cabin panels were ripped off, and the bathroom door was torn from its hold. Passengers reported that the plane shook on the runway for an unusually long time during landing, creating an atmosphere of fear.
A passenger wrote on social media that they were at work when they heard a loud explosion and saw smoke billowing towards the runway. An airport operations team member told them that the plane landed so hard that all the tires burst. The 221 passengers on board had to wait on the runway for almost two hours before being bussed to the terminal. The runway was temporarily closed as a precaution. However, the rest of the operation of the airport remains as normal.
According to a Fox News report, Captain Paul Carr, a retired pilot with extensive experience flying Boeing 767s, described the incident as highly unusual. He said that it is rare for all eight tires of a plane to burst simultaneously. They suspected a malfunction in the plane’s automatic braking system, which caused the brakes to lock up and the tires to burst due to excessive friction. LATAM Airlines and the US Federal Aviation Administration have been contacted following the incident. An investigation is underway, and the official cause will be revealed only after the technical fault is confirmed.
