Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the series against New Zealand due to a rib injury in the first ODI in Vadodara. Washington is the third Indian player to be injured. Wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant was ruled out of the current series last week with a side strain, while Tilak Verma is unavailable for the first three T20Is against New Zealand after surgery on a hip injury. Both are doubtful for the T20 World Cup. A BCCI official said:
Washington will miss the rest of the series due to discomfort in his lower left rib cage. India’s ODI captain Shubman Gill briefed Washington on the situation after India’s win on Sunday. “Washington Sundar has a side strain and will be scanned after the match,” Gill said. Winning shot KL Rahul said “I didn’t know he (Washington) couldn’t score. I knew he had a minor injury in the first innings, but I didn’t realize the severity of the injury. Still, he was hitting the ball very well. When he came in to bat, we were playing at a rate of almost one run per ball, so there was no need to take unnecessary risks. He wasn’t under too much pressure. He rotated the strike and did a good job. Done right.”
New Zealand, who came to bat, scored 300 runs for eight wickets with the help of half-centuries from Darryl Mitchell (84), Henry Nicholls (62) and Devon Conway (56). For India, pacers Harshit Rana, Mohammad Siraj and Prasidh Krishna took two wickets each, while spinner Kuldeep Yadav took one wicket.
India posted a thrilling 306 for six in 49 overs, including a century partnership from Kohli (91 balls, eight fours, one six) with Gill (71 balls, three fours, two sixes) and a 77-run partnership for the third wicket with Shreyas Iyer (49 runs).
