The first match of the two-match Test series between India and South Africa is being played at the Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata. On the second day of the match, Indian captain Shubman Gill retired hurt after facing just three balls in the first innings. Gill appeared to be in pain with a neck strain when he played a sweep shot to South African bowler Simon Harmer for four. Gill then spoke to his physio and decided to return to the pavilion. The BCCI has now issued a major update on Gill’s condition.
Shubman Gill is under the supervision of the medical team
Indian captain Shubman Gill came out to bat during the first session of the second day, after which he was retired hurt. When play resumed after lunch, the BCCI issued an official update on Gill’s injury. The BCCI released an update on Gill’s condition on Tuesday, saying that he has suffered a neck strain, and is now under the care of the BCCI medical team. Whether he will return to bat in the Test match will be decided based on his condition.
Team India’s problems may increase
Batting on the Kolkata Test pitch against South Africa has proved challenging, with 11 wickets falling on the first day, and a similar situation on the second day. If Shubman Gill does not return to bat, it could add to Team India’s woes, as batting on this pitch in the fourth innings will become more challenging. South Africa were bowled out for 159 in their first innings, after which Team India took the lead when play resumed after lunch on the second day.
