After the assassination of Mayor Carlos Manzo in Mexico, protests have intensified across the country. Thousands of people, led by Gen Z, took to the streets on Saturday to protest corruption, violence and government failure. Police fired tear gas at President Claudia Sheinbaum’s residence in Mexico City. Protesters called for an end to abuse of power and violence, while the government accused right-wing protesters of inciting the protests. Mayor Carlos Manzo was shot at a public Day of the Dead event earlier this month, sparking protests across the country, including in the Mexican state of Michoacán.
A small group of masked protesters in Mexico City broke down barricades surrounding the National Palace, the residence of President Claudia Sheinbaum, according to news agency witnesses. In response, the police fired tear gas shells and tried to disperse the protesters.
The protesters are targeting the president
Some protesters in Mexico City are directly targeting President Sheinbaum’s party. During the demonstration in Mexico City, some protesters expressed their anger at President Sheinbaum’s party and chanted “Morena, get out”. Some also called for stronger state efforts to curb crime and violence. The protesters said that Carlos is not dead, the government has killed him.
Protesters upset over abuse of power:
A group calling itself “GenZ Mexico,” which called for the protests, said in a manifesto posted on social media that it was not affiliated with any party. The group claims to represent young Mexicans who are troubled by violence, corruption and the abuse of power. On the other hand, the Scheinbaum government has questioned the motives behind Saturday’s march. The government said it was largely organized by right-wing political opponents and promoted through social media bots.
