A 50-year-old father, Sajid Akram, died in the attack. Her son, Naveed Akram, was found injured and has been hospitalized and is under police surveillance. Both are said to be of Pakistani origin.
The attack took place during a Hanukkah celebration attended by about 1,000 people. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, “About four months ago, on August 17, I sent a letter to Australian Prime Minister Albanese warning him that Australian government policy was fueling and encouraging anti-Semitism in Australia.”
According to eyewitnesses, the attack on Bondi Beach lasted for about 10 minutes. A huge crowd was present on the beach at that time. The sudden firing forced people to run for cover. The entire area was in chaos, with hundreds of people forced to seek shelter in nearby streets and parks.
The age of the dead and injured ranged from 10 to 87 years. Two policemen were also injured, and their condition is critical but stable.
Video footage shows the attackers carrying a bolt-action rifle and a shotgun. Police are investigating the source of the weapons.
