4 years is not enough, the service period of Agnivirs can be extended to 6 or 8 years

Major changes possible in Agnipath scheme: The Agnipath scheme, launched to modernize and make recruitment in the country’s security forces more flexible, is now likely to undergo major changes. The permanent placement percentage may increase
At present, only 25% of Agniveers get permanent appointments, while 75% are released from service after four years. The ministry is considering a modest increase in this percentage, though it is unlikely to increase significantly as it would increase the financial burden on pensioners.

Fear of shortage of staff in technical forces
Agniveer serves in various technical positions in the Navy and Air Force. Due to the long training and complex tasks, leaving them after four years can lead to shortage of skilled professionals. Therefore, all the three armed forces have suggested to extend the service period.

What is Agnipath Yojana?
Under Agneepath Yojana, youth are recruited for four years. After four years, 75% of Agniveers retire, and 25% receive permanent positions in the Army. During this period, they get a monthly salary of ₹30,000 to ₹40,000 and a service fund of around ₹1.17 lakh.

Why is change necessary?
A four-year period does not maintain continuity of experience among soldiers, requiring repeated recruitment and training. Therefore, extending the service period will not only increase the efficiency of the defense forces but also make the scheme more attractive to the youth.
