The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday adjourned its hearing on the transfer of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on a fast to death for the last 35 days, to the hospital till January 2. has been postponed The apex court is hearing the murder case on the allegation that the Punjab government did not comply with its orders to admit Dallewal to the hospital.
Advocate General Gurminder Singh, who appeared before the bench on behalf of the Punjab government, said that an application seeking three more days to comply with the court’s order of December 20 has been filed, after which Justice Surya Kant ( A vocational bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia listed the matter for further hearing on January 2.
Gurminder Singh said that a team of negotiators is talking to the agitating farmers at Kisan Andolan’s front on the Dhabi Gujran/Khanuri border and efforts are being made to shift Dallewal to a nearby temporary hospital on the Punjab side of the Khanuri border. . The bench said that it does not want to comment on the matter of talks with the protesting farmers and it only wants to follow its earlier orders.
After this, the bench recorded the arguments of the Advocate General and put the case forward for hearing. It is to be noted that earlier on December 28, the Supreme Court had severely criticized the Punjab government for not transferring Dallewal to a hospital.
Dallewal has been on a hunger strike since November 26 at the Dhabi Gujran/Khanuri border point between Punjab and Haryana to pressurize the Center to accede to farmers’ demands, including minimum support price (MSP) for crops. The demand for statutory guarantees is also included.
In this regard, farmers under the banner of the United Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have been protesting at the Shambhu and Khannoori border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13, after the Haryana security forces stopped the march to Delhi from entering Haryana.
