Azerbaijan plane crash: Putin apologized for the accident

Russian President Vladimir Putin today apologized to the President of Azerbaijan for the unfortunate incident of an Azerbaijani plane crash in Kazakhstan. 38 people died in this accident.

The plane had flown from Azerbaijan’s capital Baku to Chechnya’s capital Grozny on Wednesday. Shortly after takeoff, its route was changed and the plane crashed while trying to land in Kazakhstan. 38 people died and 29 people were injured in the accident.

In an official statement on Saturday, an official in the Russian presidential office, the Kremlin, said that air defense systems fired near Grozny due to a Ukrainian drone attack on Wednesday. He, however, refrained from saying that the aircraft was targeted by Russian air defense systems. Citing a phone conversation between the Russian president and the president of Azerbaijan, the Kremlin said Putin apologized to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev “for the fact that this unfortunate incident took place in Russian airspace.” – Ap
