Patiala, Punjab, India – November 3, 2023 – The Department of Chemistry at Punjabi University has been granted a patent for the development of a new anti-diabetic drug. The patent, titled “novel indole derivatives as anti-diabetic agents and methods thereof,” covers new chemical entities that could be used in the management of type 2 diabetes.
The research was led by Dr. Raman Kumar Verma, the principal inventor, and his research group, which includes Dr. Rajiv Mall and Dr. Amanjot Singh, the co-inventors.
Dr. Verma said that the new drug is still in the early stages of development, but it has shown promising results in preclinical studies. He said that the drug is safe and effective in lowering blood sugar levels and improving other metabolic parameters in diabetic animals.
The researchers are now planning to conduct clinical trials of the new drug to assess its safety and efficacy in humans. If the trials are successful, the drug could be available to patients within the next few years.
