Patiala, October 31, 2023: A senior soldier posted at the Central Jail in Patiala has been arrested for possession of opium, jarda powder, and other contraband items. The soldier, identified as Sepoy Jaspal Singh, was caught during a routine search of the jail premises.
According to Assistant Superintendent Jagjit Singh, a mobile phone, a charger, and 27.5 grams of opium were recovered from Jaspal Singh’s bag. A subsequent search of his residence in the jail yielded three packets of tobacco, 10 jarda puris, one earphone, two packets of rolling paper, and four data cables.
A case has been registered against Jaspal Singh at Tripri police station and further investigation is underway. It is not yet clear how he smuggled the contraband items into the jail.
This incident raises concerns about the security of the Patiala Central Jail and the possibility of drug smuggling inside the prison. The authorities must take steps to tighten security and prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
