Farmer Commits Suicide Due to Debt in Punjab

Barnala, Punjab (August 4, 2023) – A farmer in Punjab has committed suicide due to debt. Gurnam Singh, 66, of Dhillwan village in Barnala district, took a loan of 3 lakh rupees from the bank but could not repay it. He was troubled by the debt and drank poison in the field.

Singh’s family members said that he had been under financial pressure for some time. He had sold two kanals of land to repay the loan, but he was still struggling to make ends meet.

The incident has highlighted the plight of farmers in Punjab, who are often forced to take loans from the bank to meet their expenses. The high cost of inputs and low crop prices have made it difficult for farmers to make a profit, and many of them are struggling to repay their loans.

The government has announced a number of schemes to help farmers, but these schemes have not been enough to solve the problem of farmer suicides. More needs to be done to address the financial problems of farmers and to prevent such tragedies from happening in the future.
