News Patiala: The Punjab government has decided to impose a new tax on its pensioners. The tax will be 200 rupees per month and will be deducted directly from their pension payments. The finance department has approved the proposal of the Excise and Taxation Department to levy this tax.
The tax was first imposed on government employees in 2018. It is applicable to any person who is engaged in any trade, business, profession or employment in Punjab and who is an income tax payer.
The government has said that the tax will be used to fund development projects in the state. However, some pensioners have expressed concerns about the tax, saying that it will be a financial burden on them.
