A major accident took place at Carmel Convent School in Sector 9, Chandigarh today in which one girl student was killed and about a dozen children were injured, one of whom is said to be in critical condition.
The incident took place at this large convent school at around 11.15 am. The school was in recess at the time and the children were out of class.
The deceased girl student has been identified as Hirakshi of Class XII while 4 other children have undergone PGI. Have been ‘referred’.
Suddenly a huge old pipal tree was uprooted and fell on the students sitting nearby. A part of it also fell on two school buses which caused some damage to the buses but there were no children in these buses as it was not yet a holiday. This old tree was preserved as a ‘heritage tree’.
Mr. Maheshinder Singh Sidhu, Councilor of the area told reporters that a branch of the same tree was broken 4-5 years back and even then it was said that the tree should be removed but this was not taken into consideration.
Upon receiving the report of the incident, the district administration and the police rushed to the spot and the concerned parents for their children started arriving at the school.
The school claims that it has informed all the parents to take their children home and the parents are coming to the school and taking their children back home.
Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner Vinay Partap Singh said that 19 children and one staff member have been affected by this tree. He said an inquiry has been ordered into the incident. He said that within 10 minutes after the incident, the children were given PGI. Was delivered.
