India has always stood with Maldives: Jaishankar

New Delhi, January 3

India and Maldives have finalized an outline to boost the use of local currencies for cross-border trade and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said India always stands with Maldives. Jaishankar made this comment in a meeting with his Maldivian counterpart Abdullah Khalil in Delhi. Khalil has arrived here on a three-day visit yesterday to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations in many important areas including maritime security, trade and investment. “An outline has been signed to boost the use of local currencies for cross-border transactions,” Jaishankar said. He said, ‘We have increased our participation in various fields and I want to say that India always stands with Maldives. You are very important to our ‘neighbourhood first’ policy.’
It may be mentioned that Maldives is one of India’s important maritime neighbors in the Indian Ocean region and progress was seen under the previous Malian government in all bilateral relations including the defense and security sectors. -News-Patiala
