1984 anti-Sikh riots: Decision against Sajjan Kumar postponed in Delhi riots case, now decision possible on 8

New Delhi, December 16

A Delhi court may deliver its verdict on January 8 next year in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case against former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar. The court of Special Judge Kaveri Baweja was to pronounce this decision on Monday, but today they postponed the proceedings.

Adjourning today’s proceedings, the judge said, “The next date is January 8.” Accused Sajjan Kumar, who is currently lodged in Tihar Central Jail, appeared before the court through video conference. This case is related to the alleged killings of two persons in the Saraswati Vihar area during the anti-Sikh riots.

The court had reserved judgment on November 1, 1984 after hearing final arguments in the case related to the murders of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh. Although the Punjabi Bagh police station initially registered the case, a special investigation team later took over the investigation. The court framed charges against Sajjan Kumar three years ago on December 16, 2021, finding him ‘prima facie’ guilty.

According to the prosecution, a large mob armed with deadly weapons looted, burnt and destroyed Sikh properties on a large scale to avenge the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and killed a large number of Sikhs. The prosecution alleged that the mob attacked the house of the complainant Jaswant Singh’s wife and killed her husband and son, looted the house and set the house on fire.

While framing charges against the accused, the court in its order had said, “prima facie sufficient material has been found to form the opinion that he was not only involved in the crime but was also leading the mob”. -News-Patiala
