Experts say that there are two types of earthquakes. Shallow depth earthquakes are considered more dangerous because their tremors have a direct and rapid impact on the surface. Pakistan, Afghanistan and northern India fall among the world’s most earthquake-prone regions. Here, the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate collide. Due to this collision, the entire region is constantly affected by seismic activity. As a result, light tremors are often felt in all three countries. According to geologists, Pakistan is surrounded by several active fault lines, due to which both large and small earthquakes are common. Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan are considered to be the most sensitive regions as they are located on the edge of the Eurasian Plate. Punjab and Sindh, on the other hand, are located near the northern boundary of the Indian tectonic plate, and earthquakes of moderate magnitude are sometimes felt here.

A powerful earthquake also struck Indonesia on Thursday, where, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences, a magnitude 6 quake was recorded on the island of Seram. These tremors occurred at a depth of 136 km. More importantly, the quake came just 24 hours after the Semeru volcano erupted, spewing ash up to 2km high, and warning people to stay 2.5km away. Indonesia is located on the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’, with over 130 active volcanoes and frequent seismic activity.
