Amla is available in abundance in the rural markets of Uttarakhand during the winter season. Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, this fruit is considered to be very effective in boosting immunity. It is grown in abundance in the fields and gardens of Bageshwar, Almora, Pithoragarh and Champawat in the Kumaon region. Locals eat it raw with salt and pepper, while many households also make amla juice, pickles and jam. Regular consumption improves digestion and protects against seasonal ailments like cold and cough, says Ayurvedic doctor Aisal Patel.
