The second and final Test match of the series between India and South Africa will be played on November 22. After losing the first match, Team India trailed 0-1. India now have only one chance in this two-match series: win the second match and level the series. Even if there is a draw, India will lose the series. As a result, the team will have to make some major changes in the playing XI.
The right batsman is essential for the No. 3 position
India took a big risk by sending Washington Sundar at No.3 in the first Test. Sundar is a bowling all-rounder and can be useful in the lower order, but the No. 3 position is considered important in Test cricket. Over the years, Rahul Dravid and Cheteshwar Pujara formed the backbone of India’s batting in this position. Now, the team has to find a permanent batsman for this position. As an alternative, Sai Sudarshan or Devdutt Padikkal could be considered, although neither has played a significant innings on previous occasions. However, it is important to stay away from experimentation and choose a reliable batsman.
Shubman Gill is unlikely to play in the second Test in Guwahati, as he was injured in the first. In such a case, Dhruva Jurel can be promoted upwards. Jurel was selected as the batsman in the previous match, but was sent to number seven. Sending a key batsman so low raises questions about the team’s strategy. If Gill remains out, it would be better for the team to move Jurel to third or fourth.
Reduce reliance on all-rounders, increase reliance on specialist players
In recent times, India has relied heavily on all-rounders, which is having a negative impact on the team balance. Sundar got a chance to play in the last match, but bowled just one over and failed to impress with the bat. So, the team should decide whether to prioritize the key batsmen and key bowlers so that they can contribute their best and India can get back to winning ways.
