Europe is now preparing for a high-speed network, the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), which will change the way people travel across the continent. The European Commission’s plan goes beyond the rails. The entire scheme seeks to integrate rail, road, air and sea ports into an integrated structure. A high-speed rail network is central to this initiative. The commission is planning to connect several countries with trains that will travel at a speed of 250 km per hour. This means that a 1,000 km journey will take just four hours. The commission aims to almost double train speeds between most countries on the continent by 2040.
The trans-European transport network will significantly speed up rail travel between major European cities, such as Berlin and Copenhagen, Sofia and Athens, Paris and Lisbon, and Prague and Rome. The cost of the project is still under discussion, but officials say it will provide passengers with a cheaper and more convenient alternative to flights. This means that while flying from one city to another is expensive today, in the future, traveling the same distance by train will not only be faster but also feel lighter on the pocket.
The 7 hour journey will be completed in 4 hours
While it currently takes about 7 hours to travel from Berlin to Copenhagen, under this new system, the journey will be completed in just 4 hours by 2030. Similarly, the journey from Sofia to Athens, which currently takes 14 hours, will be completed in 6 hours by 2035. And if you travel from Prague to Rome, this amazing journey will only take 10 hours.
This high-speed rail network will connect major international routes such as Paris to Lisbon (via Madrid) and Warsaw to Tallinn (via Riga). This means Europeans will be able to travel between countries with greater ease and speed than ever before. These trains will not only be fast but also eco-friendly and economical.
Benefit the environment
Experts say that this project will be very beneficial for Europe. When people choose trains over car and air travel, carbon emissions will be significantly reduced. Thousands of tons of greenhouse gases could be prevented each year, helping in the fight against climate change.
