Mahashivratri 2026 School Holiday: The festive season has started in 2026. Mahashivratri is in the month of February this year. On this occasion, schools will be closed in many states across the country.
On Mahashivratri, due to huge crowd in temples and Shobha Yatra, the administration makes strict security arrangements. In view of this, the District Magistrates of many districts issue orders to close schools. This year, Mahashivratri has been given prominence in the list of February holidays.
Mahashivratri in 2026 will be celebrated on February 15 (Mahashivratri 2026 date). A large number of devotees visit Shiva temples on this day. February 15 is on Sunday. Hence Sunday and Mahashivratri fall on the same day of the official calendar in many states. However, in some states, schools may be exempted on Saturdays to prepare for the festival.
Mahashivratri holds great significance in Uttar Pradesh, especially in cities like Varanasi and Noida. As per Uttar Pradesh government holiday list, all government and private schools will remain closed on Mahashivratri. Due to Shobha Yatra and heavy rush, the administration has also implemented route diversions at several places. Therefore, it is considered preferable to keep schools closed for the safety of children. Some schools have also declared holiday on Saturday.
Schools in Delhi and nearby areas, such as Noida, Ghaziabad and Gurugram, will remain closed on Mahashivratri. Major schools in Delhi-NCR have scheduled a holiday on February 15 in their annual calendars. This year, Mahashivratri is being celebrated on Sunday.
Education departments in states like Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Haryana have also approved Mahashivratri holidays. In hilly states like Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, fairs are held on Mahashivratri. Therefore, local holidays can also be extended by two days. Students are advised to check their school WhatsApp groups or notice boards regularly to stay aware of any changes in school holidays.
