Victoria: Australia is facing a terrible heat wave. Fires have raged in the southeastern Australian state of Victoria. Amid rising temperatures, one person has died in a fire that has plunged thousands of homes into darkness. A 60-year-old man died in his car near the town of Harcourt, 110 kilometers northwest of Melbourne, on Friday afternoon, Victorian Premier Jacinta Allen said at a press conference.

Allen said the man’s death was not directly related to the fire, but occurred near the site of the fire, Xinhua News Agency reported. Three more people who went missing were found safe on Friday near the town of Longwood, 120 kilometers north of Melbourne. A missing man’s home was destroyed in one of the state’s worst wildfires.

Local fire officials said that three firefighters were injured while fighting the fire. As of Saturday morning, there were 10 major fires burning in Victoria, and officials were closely monitoring 20 more, Allen said. A total of 200 fires broke out in Victoria on Friday. The main reason for the fire was the temperature above 40 degrees Celsius. Officials believe more than 300,000 hectares of land have burned, and 38,000 homes and businesses are without power, Allen said Saturday.

Temperatures dropped on Saturday, but officials warned that strong winds would continue to fuel the fire. Fires in the state of Victoria have destroyed at least 120 buildings, and caused significant casualties, emergency management officials said Saturday. The state government declared a state of calamity in 19 areas, allowing officials to enter private properties to put out fires, control traffic and evacuate people.
