Kuala Lumpur- Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu has advanced to the semi-finals of the Malaysia Open Super 1000 badminton tournament after Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi withdrew from the quarter-finals due to injury. While in men’s doubles, Satviksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lost in the quarterfinals. Sindhu won the first game 21–11 but after that, three-time world champion and third seed Yamaguchi decided to withdraw from the match. He was wearing a knee brace. Now Sindhu’s winning record against Yamaguchi has become 15-12. Sindhu is playing her first tournament after a long time due to injury.

In the semifinals, she will face China’s second seed Wang Shiyi, who beat Indonesia’s sixth seed Kusuma Wardani 21-17, 21-18. Meanwhile, India’s Satwik and Chirag, two-time World Championship bronze medalists, lost 10-21, 21-23 to the lower-ranked Indonesian pair of Fajar Alfen and Mohammad Fikri in the men’s doubles.

PV Sindhu has reached the semifinals.

Third-seeded Satwik and Chirag, who reached the finals of the Hong Kong Open and China Masters last year, looked under pressure in the first game. The Indonesian pair took five points in a row before the Indian pair started scoring. The Indonesian pair quickly took a 12-4 lead and then won the first game with the last five points.

In the second game, the Indian duo tried to make a comeback and took the lead twice. At one point the score was tied at 19-19, but the Indonesian duo won the match with the last two points.
