Highest run scorer in the Ashes
Not only this, Steve Smith has now become the second highest run-scorer in Ashes history. He surpassed Jacob Hobbs as the leading run scorer. Hobbs scored a total of 3636 runs in 41 Ashes Tests for England against Australia from 1908 to 1930. Smith needed 84 runs to overtake Hobbs in the Sydney Test and achieved this record with a century in the last session of the third day’s play.
Coming in to bat after the dismissal of nightwatchman Michael Nesser earlier in the day, Smith took advantage of a flat pitch to reduce England’s first innings lead to 384, scoring 129, and then completed his century with ease. Smith also reached his 37th Test century in just 219 innings, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar, one innings away from the Indian batting legend who achieved the feat in 220 innings. Smith’s compatriot Ricky Ponting is the fastest Test century-scorer, having completed his 37th century in 212 innings.
Replacing Cummins as captain, Smith scored his 18th Test century as captain. Only Graeme Smith (25), Virat Kohli (20) and Ponting (19) have scored more Test centuries than him. With an average of over 68, no other captain has scored more runs in this format than Smith. Last year, Smith made history by becoming the fourth Australian to score 10,000 Test runs.
