New Delhi: The spate of attacks on the Hindu community in Bangladesh shows no sign of abating. After Deepu Chandra Das, another Hindu has been murdered. Rana Pratap Bairagi was shot dead. The incident took place in Monirampur area of Jessore district. The incident comes at a time when the violent deaths of several Hindus, including Deepu Chandra Das, a few weeks ago have raised concerns across the country and even in India. This is not just a murder, but a stark reminder of the growing insecurity faced by the minority community.
The manner in which Rana Pratap was targeted in the open market has raised questions about Bangladesh’s law and order situation and the security preparedness of the interim government. Local people are scared, and the climate of fear and insecurity in the Hindu community has deepened. India has already reacted strongly to these incidents, and now another murder has worsened the situation.
What is the whole matter?
The incident took place on Monday, January 5 at Kapalia market in Monirampur sub-district of Jessore district. According to people present at the spot, unidentified assailants suddenly opened fire on Rana Pratap Bairagi around 5:45 pm. Rana Pratap died on the spot. He was in the market for routine work when the attack took place. The deceased has been identified as 45-year-old Rana Pratap Bairagi, a resident of Arua village in Keshavpur sub-district. He was the son of Tushar Kanti Bairagi. After the incident, panic spread in the area and people started running for their lives.
What did the police say?
Monirampur police station in-charge (OC) Rajiullah Khan said that a police team immediately reached the spot and brought the situation under control. The body has been taken into custody and post-mortem process has been started. According to the police, the assailants are yet to be identified, but investigations have been intensified and CCTV footage is being scrutinised.
Why are attacks on Hindus increasing?
Experts and human rights organizations believe that extremist elements have become more active during the interim government that was formed after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government. Taking advantage of the weak law and order situation, minorities are being targeted. In many cases, mobs resort to violence based on allegations such as blasphemy, which are later proven to be false.
The security of the Hindu community in Bangladesh is no longer just an internal issue, but a serious human rights crisis. The murder of Rana Pratap Bairagi is a sign that things are far from normal. It will be difficult to end this climate of fear unless the culprits are punished severely.
