science According to a study published in the journal ‘Health Data Science’, sleeping at different times every day is as harmful for the body as getting less sleep. This study, which lasted for about 7 years, has revealed a deep connection between sleep and diseases.

In this study conducted on 88,461 people, everyone’s sleep patterns were tracked with the help of wearable devices. A wearable device is an electronic gadget like a smart watch, which tracks total sleep time, sleep-wake time, heart rate and other body activities.

A health study revealed that sleeping at different times every day, staying awake late at night and irregular body clock increases the risk of 172 diseases.

so physical health Today we will talk about this sleep study. You will also learn that-

  • The risk of which diseases increases due to worsening sleep pattern?
  • How to fix sleep cycle?

Question- What does the new ‘sleep study’ published in ‘Health Data Science’ say? Why is this being called the most authentic sleep study ever conducted?

answer- This study revealed that there is a direct relationship between sleep patterns and diseases.

This study is being considered the most authentic so far because most of the earlier studies were based on subjective sleep measurement, meaning people themselves told how much they slept.

Here data was taken from objective measurement, which is more accurate. That means data was tracked from the wearable device.

Also, this study is based on large databases like UK Biobank and has also been validated with National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES) data.

Question: By how much does the risk of which diseases increase due to irregular, less and poor quality sleep?

answer- Studies have found that irregular sleep (sleeping at different times every day), less than 6 hours of sleep and poor quality sleep (repeated opening of eyes at night) or less efficient sleep increases the risk of many diseases.

  • The risk of a total of 172 diseases increases and 92 of these diseases are directly affected by sleep.
  • Lack of sleep increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes and obesity by 1.5 to 2 times.
  • Poor sleep increases inflammation, which can increase the risk of liver cirrhosis by 2.57 times.

Question- Liver, kidney and heart are vital organs of the body. Poor quality sleep damages them. Does this mean that sleep disturbance is a life threatening condition?

answer- Yes, poor quality sleep can indeed be life threatening. Studies have shown that poor sleep increases inflammation, which impairs the filtering and functioning of these organs.

This condition is life threatening because the problems gradually increase. Initially you feel tired, but in the long run it can cause organ failure. Remember, sleep is not just a matter of rest, but a repair process of the body. Ignoring it means putting your life in danger.

Question- What is meant by irregular sleep in this study, how is it different from less sleep?

answer- In the study, irregular sleep means disturbance of sleep rhythm. Meaning, the body clock gets disturbed by sleeping and waking up at different times every day. The body clock operates on a 24-hour circadian rhythm. If you sleep at 10 o’clock today and 1 o’clock tomorrow, your body does not know when to go into rest mode.

Poor sleep is simply a lack of sleep hours, such as sleeping 5 hours a day. But in irregular sleep, the hours of sleep may be complete, but the timing is disturbed.

Less sleep increases diabetes or obesity, but irregular sleep increases inflammation and neurological issues. Both are bad, but irregular sleep affects the internal systems of the body more.

Question- Is irregular sleeping habit more dangerous than less sleep?

answer- Yes, according to studies, irregular sleep can be more dangerous than less sleep, because it directly affects the circadian rhythm of the body. If you get less sleep then the body gets tired. But that fatigue can be recovered by sleeping more the next day.

At the same time, irregular sleep leads to imbalance of hormones, immunity and metabolism. 83 out of 172 diseases in the study are ‘sleep rhythm specific’, meaning they are directly related to irregular sleep. The risk of liver cirrhosis or gangrene increases due to irregular sleep timing. The risk due to less sleep is 1.5-2 times, but due to irregular sleep the risk can be 2.5-3.36 times. Therefore it is more important to sleep at the same time every day.

Question- What effect does delaying sleep by 30-60 minutes have on the body?

answer- If sleeping time is delayed by 30-60 minutes every day, then the body clock gets shifted. The study found that sleeping time after 00:30 increases the risk of liver fibrosis by 2.57 times. Due to this, the production of melatonin hormone, which controls sleep and immunity, gets disturbed.

Inflammation increases in the body, heart rate becomes unstable and one feels tired the next day. In the long run, it can increase diabetes, obesity and mental stress.

Question- Does irregular sleep also affect mental health?

answer- Of course, irregular sleep has a deep impact on mental health. The study found that irregular sleep increases anxiety, stress and neurological issues.

The risk of Parkinson’s disease may increase by 37%. Due to poor sleep, brain chemicals like serotonin become unbalanced, which worsens the mood. Sleeping at different times every day reduces focus, increases irritability and also increases the risk of depression. It affects both physical and mental health.

Question- Can sleeping at the same time every day reduce the risk of diseases?

answer- Yes, it strengthens the circadian rhythm, which can significantly reduce the risk of 172 diseases.

The study revealed that regular sleep reduces the risk of gangrene and regular sleep reduces liver problems. This controls inflammation, increases immunity and keeps the organs healthy. These are easy changes that prove beneficial in the long run.

Question- What to do to improve sleep pattern? How to fix sleep cycle?

answer- Improving sleep patterns is easy, it just takes a little discipline. First of all, make a routine of sleeping and waking up at the same time every day, like sleeping at 10 pm and waking up at 6 am.

Do not sleep too much during the day, take a nap of only 20-30 minutes, that too only if necessary. Avoid caffeine or heavy meals in the evening. Reduce screen time, as blue light blocks melatonin (a hormone needed for sleep).

  • Do exercise daily.
  • If you can’t sleep, try deep breathing or meditation.
  • Track your sleep routine with a wearable device.
  • If the problem is severe then consult a doctor.
  • If needed, you can take help of CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy).
  • Gradually this will become a habit and the body clock will set itself.
