Increased type-2 diabetes risk in children due to gestational diabetes

The mother’s blood sugar level is high due to gestational diabetes. It also reaches the child through a placenta i.e. the tube that deliver food to the baby in the womb. To process it, the child’s pancreas starts making more insulin. This affects his metabolism and further increases the risk of type-2 diabetes.

Dr. Himani Sharma says that if the mother had a complaint of gestational diabetes, then let us assume that the child is more at risk of obesity and type-2 diabetes in future than other children. What to do to avoid gestational diabetes?

According to Dr. Himani Sharma, the main reason for gestational diabetes during pregnancy is hormonal changes. Therefore, it is difficult to avoid this, but if planning is started before conceiving, its risk can be reduced.

  • Check blood sugar level about 6 months before pregnancy. Get your HBA1C test done and make sure it is absolutely normal.
  • However, do the morning fasting insulin with HBA1C and make sure that the level of morning insulin is normal.
  • If blood sugar level is normal, but insulin is increased then the chances of gestational diabetes will increase.
  • The level of fasting insulin should be between 5–15 μu/ml in the body.
  • Fasting blood sugar level should be less than 100.
  • Check blood sugar level after about 2 hours of breakfast.
  • If the blood sugar is 120 mg/dl or more after breakfast, then it is a sign of predeabities.

Dr. Himani Sharma says that insulin levels should be measured to detect pre-diabetes. In fact, the body controls the blood sugar level by releasing more insulin many times. Therefore, sugar looks normal in the investigation, while the problem is started.

To avoid this, do regular exercises. Include as much fruit and vegetables in the food. Do not eat anything fried. Get 8 hours of sleep daily. Manage stress Keep it under weight control. Keep doing manual labor during pregnancy. If the blood sugar is under continuous blood sugar level control before pregnancy, then the risk of gestational diabetes is relatively reduced.
