The Supreme Court has dismissed the petition of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) challenging the bail granted by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in the money laundering case to Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira from Punjab. The High Court granted bail to Khaira on January 27, 2022 in a case registered in 2015 under the NDPS Act. A bench headed by Justice MM Sundresh rejected the ED’s plea saying it was not ready to hear it. Additional Solicitor General SV Raju had claimed that Khaira was stalling the proceedings by filing the applications so that the court proceedings could not proceed. Khaira wrote on X after the Supreme Court’s verdict, “I am very thankful to God and the honorable Supreme Court that they have given me justice by dismissing the ED’s bail plea today.”
