Chandigarh, January 7
A Gram Panchayat of Punjab’s Bathinda district has announced a cash assistance of Rs 21,000 to those families who do not serve alcohol and do not play DJ music in wedding ceremonies. Amarjeet Kaur, Sarpanch of Ballo village, said on Tuesday that this decision has been taken to encourage the villagers not to spend wastefully on wedding ceremonies and to stop the abuse of alcohol.
He said that it is common to see that fights break out in villages during events where DJs or loud music and alcohol are served. In addition, loud noise also disrupts students’ studies. He said that we want to encourage people not to spend extravagantly during wedding ceremonies. The Sarpanch of the village said that the Panchayat has passed a resolution, according to which if a family does not use alcohol and DJ does not play music, they will be given 21 thousand rupees.
Amarjit Kaur further said that the panchayat has demanded the government to build a stadium in the village so that the youth can be encouraged to participate in sports. The panchayat has also proposed to set up a biogas plant in the village. He said that free seeds will also be given to the farmers practicing organic farming. News-Patiala
