Security has been beefed up in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district today after an SP was injured in a mob attack while the central armed forces failed to remove them as per the demands of Kuki groups.
It may be mentioned that a mob attacked the office of Superintendent of Police M Prabhakar on Friday evening to express their anger over the continuous deployment of central forces, especially BSF and CRPF, in Saibol village. The police vehicles inside the SP office were vandalized. Officials said that Prabhakar was injured due to being hit by a projectile on his forehead. A senior officer of Imphal said that a large contingent of security forces has been deployed in the area.
The Kangpokpi-based Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU) blocked the critical transport route of National Highway 2, disrupting the movement of goods in the Imphal Valley, protesting the December 31 crackdown by security forces.
Police officials said that during the operation, security forces recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition from Loibol Khunau area of the district on Friday. including one modified 7.62 mm sniper rifle, one improved long-range mortar, three 9mm pistols with magazines, one 12 bore gun, one SBBL gun, 10 rounds of live ammunition, three hand grenades, three picket grenades, two tear smoke Grenade and a wireless set.
