Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau may resign as leader of the Liberal Party this week due to internal conflict and declining popularity in the party, a media report said. The Globe and Mail newspaper, citing sources, said it was unclear when Trudeau would step down but was expected to resign before a key meeting on Wednesday.
Trudeau has been the Prime Minister of Canada since 2015. A source who spoke to the prime minister recently said Trudeau, 53, believes he needs to make a statement before the party meeting (Liberal caucus) so he doesn’t appear to be insulting his own MPs. has been forcibly removed by
Sources said it was not clear whether Trudeau would step down immediately or remain prime minister until a new leader was elected. The Liberal Party’s national executive will make decisions on leadership issues and is proposed to meet this week, the report said. A source said on Sunday that they expected Trudeau to remain in office until a new leader was elected.
A Liberal Party source said it would take at least three months to decide the leadership, although the party constitution provides for a minimum of four months. The news of Trudeau’s resignation comes at a time when his popularity in the country continues to decline and elections are due in the country by the end of October. -News-Patiala
