Another virus

With two cases of HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus) reported in Bangalore and one in Gujarat, the level of awareness about this virus associated with the respiratory system has increased. This virus was first identified in 2001. Although this is not new, it can lead to many health problems, especially in children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. . All the cases found in India are children, and there is no record of their recent travel. This shows that the virus is already there. Globally, HMPV is considered to be the leading cause of severe respiratory disease, particularly in winter or early spring. Its symptoms are usually cold-like, but after some time pneumonia can also occur. Despite the spread, there is no vaccine or antiviral treatment available for this virus yet, which makes it necessary to adopt more preventive measures.
India has increased vigilance and monitoring through the Council of Medical Research (ICMR). Apart from this, the Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP) has also been activated. Laboratories are now well equipped to conduct HMPV tests. As seen during the Covid-19 pandemic, reading the trends and taking these steps for timely action has become important although challenges remain. Low-cost and easy-to-use tests are still not available, which hampers early detection of the disease in vulnerable groups. The pandemic has taught us the importance of proactive health-care strategies. Its spread can be curbed by strengthening patient isolation rules, ensuring availability of medicines and raising public awareness about sanitation. Cleanliness and clean air play an equal role in reducing respiratory infections.
India has adopted a precautionary approach to HMPV infection, which shows how to prevent it without creating a consensus. Apart from this, some major initiatives are required. These include investments in healthcare infrastructure and establishment of a regulatory framework for rapid diagnostic approvals. Apart from these, citizens can also help prevent it by keeping clean and taking timely medical assistance and being vigilant. These cases of HMPV serve as a wake-up call in the ongoing battle against respiratory diseases. It is not an epidemic situation but vigilance, preparedness and public cooperation are essential to limit its impact.
