Temperatures drop in Delhi, Punjab: Cold wave has gained strength in North India

Cold weather continued in parts of North and West India today in Delhi, Punjab and Rajasthan with the mercury falling by several degrees. The rise in minimum temperature has brought some respite from the cold in the highlands of Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. However, this relief is temporary as the Meteorological Department has predicted a cold wave in some parts of the valley in the next three days. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the minimum temperature in the national capital Delhi fell to 4.9 degrees Celsius, which is 3.1 degrees below normal. The Meteorological Department has predicted moderate fog in Delhi on Monday. The minimum temperature is expected to be 5 degrees and the maximum temperature is 23 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, Punjab and Haryana were also under the grip of cold. According to the Meteorological Department, Faridkot recorded the lowest temperature of 1 degree Celsius. Gurdaspur and Bathinda recorded minimum night temperatures of 2 degrees Celsius and 4.6 degrees Celsius respectively. Pathankot recorded 3.5 degrees Celsius, Amritsar 3.9 degrees, Ludhiana 6.8 degrees and Patiala 3.8 degrees Celsius. Hisar in Haryana recorded 1.7 degrees Celsius and Narnaul recorded a minimum temperature of 3 degrees Celsius. Bhiwani recorded 4 degrees, Gurugram 5.6, Rohtak 5.2 and Ambala 5.7 degrees Celsius. Chandigarh, the common capital of both the states, recorded a minimum temperature of 4.8 degrees Celsius. Temperatures rose by three to five degrees in the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh, while cold weather prevailed in the lower hills as the weather remained dry. Srinagar, the summer capital of the Kashmir valley, recorded a minimum temperature of zero to 3.4 degrees Celsius.
