Chandigarh’s lifeline Sukhna Lake’s condition was like that of 2016 when all boating water sports in the lake had to be shut down due to drought but no one thought that the lake would fill up in a week’s time.

Chandigarh has been receiving heavy rains since the onset of the monsoon. Lake Sukhna is flooded with rainwater. Now it is time to open the flood gate of the lake.

The water level of the lake has reached near the danger mark. The water level of the lake reached close to 1161.5 feet after heavy rains on Sunday morning. The water level near 1162 feet is considered above the danger mark. Flood gates have to be opened as soon as you reach 1163 feet. Now the flood gates of the lake can be opened at any time.

24-hour monitoring

The UT administration is on alert as the water level of Sukhna Lake has reached the danger mark. A team from the administration’s engineering department is monitoring the lake 24 hours a day.

Now the flood gates of the lake can be opened at any time. Earlier, the administration had informed the Panchkula and Mohali administrations and sent alerts. This is because the water of the lake passes through Sukhna Choa and the water of the lake reaches Ghaggar.

Sukhna Chow reaches Ghaggar through Baltana through Chandigarh Industrial Area. On the way to Choa are several residential areas including Bapu Dham, an industrial area colony. Due to this, the administration will be alerted by deploying police at all Sukhna Chow crossings before opening the flood gate.
