Supreme Court orders AIIMS to set up expert panel to examine Dallewal’s health reports

The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday ordered the director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to inform the Punjab government about the health of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal. A panel of experts should be set up to examine the reports submitted by The apex court passed this order due to the fact that during the hearing held in the court today regarding Dallewal’s health, the Punjab government claimed that the farmer leader’s health conditions are stable and improving.

The Supreme Court bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice N Kotiswar Singh directed the Punjab Chief Secretary to inquire about Dallewal’s health during the day on December 19, December 24 and December 30, 2024 and Submit the compilation of six medical reports dated January 3, January 9 and January 14, 2025 to the Registrar (Judge) of the Supreme Court. The bench directed the Supreme Court registrar to send the reports to the director of AIIMS to get an opinion on Dallewal’s test reports from the expert panel.

The bench adjourned the matter till January 22 while awaiting the opinion of the AIIMS expert panel. The bench has pronounced these orders while hearing the petition of the Haryana government, in which the Haryana government has challenged the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, in which the High Court has ordered the Haryana government to appoint the Haryana Police. has ordered to remove the barricades installed on the border. Also, a defamation petition filed against the Chief Secretary and DGP of Punjab is being heard by the bench.

The bench expressed surprise as to how the health standards of a person who has been fasting for nearly 50 days is improving.

The court’s comments came after senior counsel Kapil Sibal, appearing for the Punjab government, submitted reports that “he (Dallewal)’s standards are right now.” As Sibal said Dallewal’s health conditions were improving, Justice Kant asked him a twisting question.

Justice Kant asked, “Where are the fresh standards? Last time some officials filed an affidavit that his condition was deteriorating… now you are saying his standards are improving… how can this be?”
