A special court in Pune today granted bail to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case related to his alleged objectionable remarks about Hindu ideologue VD Savarkar. The Special Court for Members of Parliament and MLAs granted bail to the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha on a surety bond of Rs 25,000 after appearing in the court through video conferencing. Senior Congress leader Mohan Joshi appeared in the court as surety. Advocate Milind Pawar, appearing for Gandhi, said that the court has exempted the Congress leader from personal appearance. Pawar said that the next hearing of the case will be held on February 18. The case was registered on the complaint of Savarkar’s grandson and related to a speech given by Gandhi in London in March 2023. In his speech, Gandhi made comments about Savarkar by referring to a book written by the freedom fighter. -News-Patiala
