Kundan Lal Sehgal’s father Amarchand Sehgal was a tehsildar in the court of Jammu and Kashmir and mother Kesarbai Sehgal was a homemaker. She was a religious woman and often used to go to the temple with Sehgal, where she used to join Bhajan-Kirtan. In childhood, Sehgal also used to get a chance to perform in Ramlila. He used to play the role of Mother Sita in Ramlila.

Sometimes timekeeper and sometimes salesmen
After completion of schooling, Kundan worked as a railway timekeeper. Later he also joined a company as a salesman. During the work, he got a chance to roam in many places in India, just what was then his luck with Mehrchand Jain, who was a resident of Anarkali Bazaar in Lahore. Kundan Lal Sehgal, who started his career as a singer, was advised by friend Meherchand to act to enhance his talent.
Used to sing after drinking alcohol
KL Sehgal gave his voice to more than 180 songs in his career. His songs like to listen to people even today. He sang songs in many other languages including Hindi, Bengali and Urdu. However, there is an anecdote about Kundan, who gave voice to songs like ‘When the heart is broken, we will live…, he used to give voice to the songs only when his throat was alcohol. However, he recorded the song ‘Jab Dil Hi Taut Gaya’ from the 1946 film ‘Shahjahan’ without touching alcohol. This song became a big hit and even today people hum this song. KL Sehgal had said about this song that in my last journey, the song ‘Jab Dil Hi Taut Gaya’ should be played and that was the same.
