Iran US War News Update: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi warned on Thursday that the US would regret the attack on an Iranian warship. He said that the attack on the Iranian ship IRIS Dena by an American submarine in the waters near Sri Lanka is a serious incident. In a post on social media platform X, he said that America committed this cruel act in international waters off the coast of Iran. According to them, the ship, carrying about 130 sailors, was a guest of the Indian Navy and was attacked without warning.
The Iranian Navy’s warship IRIS Dena sank in the Indian Ocean on the morning of March 4. The incident occurred about 40 nautical miles south of Galle, Sri Lanka. It is believed to be the first major naval incident on the deep seas during the US-Israel-Iran war. According to experts, this indicates that the war may now spread closer to Indian waters. This is because the Iranian ship that was sunk was returning home after participating in MILAN 2026 and International Fleet Review 2026 held in Visakhapatnam, India a few weeks ago.
According to Sri Lanka’s Navy and Defense Ministry, the attack was carried out by a torpedo launched from a submarine. The ship sent a distress call between 5:08 and 5:30 a.m. Thursday. The message stated that there was a large explosion underwater, which caused the ship to suffer significant damage and quickly fill with water. Within minutes, the ship disappeared from radar and sank. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that the ship had been attacked by a torpedo from an American submarine. According to Galle Hospital officials, rescue teams recovered 87 bodies from the sea. 32 sailors were rescued and hospitalized. About 180 people were on board, of whom about 60 are still missing.
The Sri Lankan Navy immediately launched a search and rescue operation after receiving a distress call about the ship. Navy spokesperson Budhika Sampath said that although the incident took place outside Sri Lankan waters, the rescue was done on humanitarian grounds. Several surviving sailors were found floating in the sea and immediate assistance was rendered to them.
