Parliamentary elections are to be held in neighboring Nepal on March 5. Security officials from Nepal and India have agreed to close border posts for 72 hours to ensure safe voting and conduct of elections. The 16th Deputy Inspector General (DIG) level coordination meeting between the Nepal Armed Police Force (APF) and India’s Armed Forces (SSB) was held at Biratnagar in Morang district on Friday. In the meeting, both sides agreed to tighten border controls to prevent infiltration that could disrupt the elections.

Why was the border closed?

APF spokesperson DIG Bishnu Prasad Bhatt told IANS, “We requested the Indian side to close the border posts two days before the elections, and they agreed to our proposal. As per the agreement, the border posts will remain closed for three days (72 hours) including the election day.” He added that closing border posts before elections is a practice in both countries. Bhatt added that since there is heavy deployment of security agencies at the polling stations during the elections, it is necessary to stop the movement of unwanted groups across the border.

What was agreed upon?

According to the APF, the two sides discussed border security, control of cross-border crimes, prevention of illegal entry of third-country nationals, human trafficking, counterfeit currency, arms and ammunition, as well as drug trafficking and trade. India has repeatedly expressed concern over the possibility of infiltration by Pakistani militants taking advantage of the open border between Nepal and India. APF said the meeting also discussed issues like security of border posts, facilitation of passenger movement, joint patrolling, disaster relief exercises and joint sports activities.

Both sides agreed to identify sensitive border points, assess potential risks, monitor the movement of refugees and migrants and conduct regular inspections at various levels.
