These days a new Android malware has scared smartphone users. Researchers from antivirus maker ESET have discovered a new Android malware named PromptSpy, which targets users with the help of Google Gemini. While traditional malware uses coding, this is said to be the first Android malware that targets its target with the help of generative AI.
This is why PromptSpy is dangerous
The researcher says that this malware sends the information visible on the user’s screen to Google Gemini and asks what needs to be done next. Because of this, it can adopt different methods to target each Android device. That means PromptSpy does not work according to the pre-written script. It takes real-time information from Gemini based on the screenshot and then takes further action accordingly. In comparison, traditional malware works based on pre-written code and can only target selected devices or interfaces.
PromptSpy can also steal important information
The researcher says that this is a spyware, which can take over Android devices. It can not only access the information displayed on the device’s screen but can also list all the apps installed on your phone and steal the lockscreen PIN and password. Similarly, it can do many things including taking screenshots, recording screen activity and extracting information about the apps being used.
What is the method of prevention?
The researcher said that till now this malware has not targeted a large number of people, but it has been used against some users in Argentina. To avoid this, users will have to boot Android in safe mode. Also, Google has said that users should keep Plate Protect on on their devices, so that malware will not be installed on their devices.
