According to China Pulse posts and reports, the case concerns the former mayor of Haikou (Haikou), whose name has been variously identified as Zhang Qi. Investigating agencies raided his house and recovered 13.5 tonnes of pure gold bricks and bars from a secret basement. Apart from this, 23 tonnes of cash including currency and bank notes worth billions of dollars were recovered. Investigators also seized several of the corrupt mayor’s luxury properties, expensive hotels, villas and a fleet of high-end cars in China and abroad. The net worth of the properties is estimated to be in the billions of dollars.
According to investigating agencies, the mayor amassed this wealth mainly through bribes related to government contracts, land deals and construction projects. During his 10-year tenure, the mayor abused his power and took substantial bribes. The investigation found that the money was also illegally transferred through foreign bank accounts and shell companies. A Chinese court indicted him on charges of corruption, abuse of power and misappropriation of public funds. Sentencing him to death, the court said the crime was very serious for the society and no leniency would be shown under the party’s strict policy.
