Earthquake tremors were felt in Delhi-NCR between Sunday and Monday night. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS) and the United States Geological Survey (USGS), a powerful earthquake of magnitude 6.3 struck near one of the largest cities in northern Afghanistan at 2:00 am (Indian Standard Time). The epicenter was 51 km from Mazar-e-Sharif and 23 km from Khulam in Samangan province. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake was recorded at a depth of about 28 km.
So far, 20 people have died and more than 140 have been injured, according to the Samangan Provincial Health Department. The death toll is expected to rise. There are reports of heavy damage in several villages in Mangan and Balkh provinces. Rescue operations are ongoing to pull out people trapped under the debris, and the death toll is expected to rise.
Among the areas worst affected by the earthquake was Mazar-e-Sharif, where the famous “Ruza Mubarak”, the shrine of Hazrat Ali, was also damaged. Decorative tiles and bricks fell from the historic dargah, covering the surrounding area in debris. Photos and videos circulating on social media show cracks on the walls of the shrine and tiles falling from the blue domes.
“The Mazar-e-Sharif mosque and many surrounding buildings have been heavily damaged. Many people have been injured, and some have even lost their lives. This is a sad day for us,” said Haji Zaid, spokesman for Balkh province’s governor.
