New Delhi- In 2019, Sanjay Manjrekar made perhaps his biggest mistake as a cricket analyst when he called Ravindra Jadeja a “bits and pieces” player. The left-handed all-rounder did not take the comment lightly and was determined to prove the former Indian cricketer wrong. Jadeja succeeded in this, not just in one, but in all three formats. However, this streak lasted only till 2022 in T20 Internationals. He then retired from the format after winning the World Cup in 2024. However, his best time in one day lasted until 2023, when he was at his peak.

Jadeja has undoubtedly been one of India’s best all-rounders in Test cricket and has emerged as a reliable name since the retirement of Ravichandran Ashwin in December 2024. However, his performance in limited overs cricket has been average in the last two years. His career, especially in one-day cricket, has now come under scrutiny, whether due to lack of matches or ineffective performances with both bat and ball. Talking about T20 internationals, that chapter is now closed for him. As a result, the focus in white-ball cricket has now shifted entirely to the one-day format. The likes of Akshar Patel and Washington Sundar have established themselves as potential replacements for Jadeja in the 50-over format, leaving little time for Jadeja to prove himself and further his ODI career.

Analysis of Jadeja’s decline in ODIs

In the 2023 World Cup year, where India suffered a heartbreaking loss to Australia in the final, Jadeja played 26 matches. In these matches, he scored 309 runs at an average of 30.90 and took 31 wickets. Earlier, after the 2019 World Cup, he had scored only 259 runs and took 8 wickets in 12 matches. This is where his performance can be considered to begin to decline. Thereafter, he did not play a single ODI in 2024, while in 2025 and 2026 combined, he played only 13 ODIs, scoring 139 runs and taking 12 wickets. Although he has taken 2866 runs and 232 wickets in 208 ODIs, the decline in his performances over the last two years cannot be ignored. So many people have started to believe that Jadeja is in the last phase of his career and his potential replacements have done well enough to earn their place in the team.

Akshar Patel’s view

Even though Akshar Patel made his ODI debut in 2014, he has progressed a lot in the format over the last year. His impressive performances while batting in the top order in T20 Internationals has won the confidence of not only the captain and coach but also the selectors. Akshar is not in the current India vs New Zealand ODI series as he is part of the T20 World Cup squad, and the team management does not want to risk overplaying him. However, his return for the series against England in June is considered certain. This means that Jadeja has only two ODIs left to prove himself. In 2025, Akshar Patel scored 290 runs and took 11 wickets in 11 ODIs, the best performance of his ODI career so far.
